The day couldn’t have been a better single day testing ground; not only did we get some continuous rain for the first hour or so but the Power Box also took an unexpected spill off the refreshment cooler. Bosch ECP

Bosch Electronic Cell Protection (ECP) is built in to Bosch batteries to guard against overloading, overheating and deep discharge. It is also great for intelligent power management and ensures a longer lifetime.

  • Protection against overload
    The tool is shut down if the battery pack is put under excessive load.
  • Protection against overheating
    The electronics intervene and shut down the tool before the battery heats up excessively.
  • Protection against deep discharge
    The ECP ensures that the battery is not deeply discharged, therefore protecting it against irreparable damage.

Lithium-ion (Li-Ion) Batteries

The latest Li-Ion technology allows this battery to be charged unusually quickly. It also permits the battery to be topped up at any time, even if its charge level is still quite high, with no reduction in lifetime.

Thanks to the Bosch exclusive ECP (Electronic Cell Protection) technology, a Bosch lithium-ion battery will never overheat. If the battery gets too hot during discharge, the ECP actively manages the performance of the tool until the battery has reached the optimum working temperature again. This means that there is no risk of overheating. Furthermore, Bosch has developed a heat conductive housing (Bosch Heat Management), which transfers the heat from the inside to the outside of the battery pack for added safety.
In comparison to older style batteries, Li-Ion batteries have a higher energy density compared to NiCd/NiMH batteries. Lithium-ion cells have about three times the voltage of nickel cells, which means that one lithium-ion cell makes up for 3 nickel cells. In essence, the Li-Ion battery pack is lighter in weight due to its build structure.

These batteries feature Bosch CoolPack technology; a passive cell cooling system. This refers to the process of optimally dissipating heat which in turn causes temperature reduction. This allows for better performance and a greatly improved run time. You’ll also enjoy an increased lifetime by up to 100 per cent compared to Li-Ion batteries without CoolPack. Finally, one of the greatest benefits of Bosch CoolPack batteries is that you only need to stop when the job is done.

When it comes to concrete Bosch is one of the frontrunners in this area.  When you talk with anyone doing demolition work, they can tell you a story about their Bosch.  Here’s one.  When I worked during the Chicago flood, we had to go into the sub-basement of Marshall Fields and do a ton of demo work.  At the time we used Bosch Rotary tools and we beat the heck out these tools.  They were covered in dust, fell in the water and had tons of bricks fall on them.  The one thing I remember is that no matter what we did with these tools, they just kept on pumping away and working.  Nothing stopped them.  So there is my story, so let’s jump into the Bosch Cordless Rotary Hammer Review.

For years the only option we had for Rotary Hammers was corded versions.  Over the years battery technology has changed and now we have cordless rotary hammers.  Cordless has many advantages but the one disadvantage it has is the run time compared to corded tools.  However, with the Bosch Core battery and the way Bosch designed these tools, the runtime is top notch and will outlast you.

Today we are focusing on the Bosch GBH18V which is a 3/4″ SDS Plus Rotary Hammer.  The tool is compact which makes it perfect for those smaller areas.  Don’t worry, the tool may be small but the power is all there.

Today we are focusing on the Bosch GBH18V which is a 3/4″ SDS Plus Rotary Hammer.  The tool is compact which makes it perfect for those smaller areas.  Don’t worry, the tool may be small but the power is all there.

While you can use any Bosch 18V Lithium battery on this tool, you will get the biggest kick from the Bosch 18V Core battery.

Bosch built this tool to tackle the toughest jobs.  The rotary hammer packs 1.3 Ft-Lbs of impact energy and has a no-load speed rating of 0-5,850 bpm’s and a no-load spm of 0-1,800.  The tool is compact and lightweight (5.7 lbs without battery).

The tool provides electronic motor protection to protect the motor from overheating.

The tool offers three modes of operation.  Drilling, Chisel, Drilling & Hammering.  Plus there is a vario setting to adjust the angle of your chisel bit.

The tool has a D-Handle shape design which makes it much more comfortable than a pistol grip.  The rubber, textured grip helps with stability even when it gets dusty.

The large variable speed trigger is nice.  Some will be able to use two fingers with this switch.  We found it easy to keep a consistent speed when drilling. The forward and reverse are located within easy access for your thumb and finger. The back has a nice overhang so when using in various angles you can put your hand on there for added support. The rotary hammer comes with a depth gauge and a side handle.  We did find the side handle does get in the way when in a certain position.  We found it difficult to change modes on the tool when the side handle was on the left side of the tool.  We were having to move the side handle because the flange would get in the way.

We took off my back room at my house and still had part of the foundation left over so what better place to try drilling and chipping?  For the chipping, this tool doesn’t take a rest.  I was able to chip away at the foundation with ease.

The vibration from the chipping was very little and while I shouldn’t have been surprised, I was surprised how little feedback I received from chipping.  Sure, I could feel it in my hands but not nearly what I thought I would feel.

 

Drilling a hole with this rotary hammer felt like I was drilling into wood.  As with chipping, I didn’t feel a ton of feedback in my hands and arms.  Just another reason why Bosch is one of the frontrunners in the concrete arena.

We always try to be objective but with the Bosch cordless rotary hammer, it was hard to find anything to complain about.  Sure the side handle gets in the way when you try to change modes, but that is nothing to write home about.

The tool is powerful and compact which makes it perfect for even tight areas.  We love how little vibration you feel.  We found it amazing that a tool this small can pack so much energy into it, but produce so little feedback to the user’s hands and arms.

How to make your power tool batteries last longer

Follow these simple tricks to make the lithium ion (Li-ion) batteries in your cordless tools last longer so you get the most out of your investment.

1. When should I charge?

Charge your batteries when you notice a decrease in performance of your tool. Modern Lithium Ion batteries don’t have the ‘memory effect’ of older Ni-Cad batteries so you don’t have to wait until it’s fully discharged. In fact, frequent deep discharging is actually worse for them and will reduce battery life.

2. How should I store my battery?

Keep your battery in a cool dry place. Heat is your battery’s worst enemy so storing it in a hot place, like a car or exposed metal shed, can damage the battery and reduce its life. Take the battery out of the tool and charge it to about 50% capacity. If storing for longer than six months, give it a quick charge to bring it back up to around 50 per cent. The easiest way to remind yourself is to quickly pop a reminder in your phone.

3. How do I know when it’s time to replace?

Even with the best care, batteries will deteriorate over time and replacement will be needed. The most obvious sign that your battery has gone is when it doesn’t last very long after being fully charged. Another sign is that it takes a long time for your battery to charge. Most good quality tools have smart chargers and they can detect when a battery is on its last legs and will let you know via its display.

4. How do I dispose of old batteries?

Upgraded Bosch Freak two-in-one tool takes advantage of CORE18V battery power and efficiency

Mount Prospect, Ill., June 27, 2019 – The Bosch Freak, half impact driver, half impact wrench, now offers even more power as the Bosch GDX18V-1800C, delivering 1,800 In.-Lbs. of max torque. This a versatile tool that delivers results: A 1/4 In. quick-change hex shank holder with Power Groove to secure bits combines with a 1/2 In. square drive impact wrench for sockets.

The updated Freak features Bluetooth® connectivity, which connects the tool to the free Bosch Toolbox App (available at the Apple App Store® or the Google Play® Store), on a connected device to customize settings and provide detailed feedback. The optional GCY30-4 Connectivity Tool Module must be installed to use the app.

Driven by an efficient, maintenance-free EC Brushless motor, the Bosch Freak supplies plenty of fastener-tightening force. Bosch’s hammer-and-anvil system delivers maximum impact energy and performance to handle the toughest concrete-, wood- and metal-fastening tasks on the jobsite.

This advanced cell technology is incorporated in Bosch CORE18V 4.0 Ah batteries, which brings all of the capability of a two-layer 4.0 Ah battery into a smaller, lighter package. The 21700 cell introduces greater capacity in a pack that’s only slightly larger than previous generation single-layer batteries.

With weight of only 2.6 Lbs. (tool only), the Freak impact driver provides easy maneuverability. It features a soft slim-grip handle and non-slip housing for secure handling and an LED light system for maximum illumination, even in the darkest corners.

Bosch-exclusive Electronic Cell Protection (ECP) and Electronic Motor Protection (EMP) combine to help protect the tool and battery from overheating and overload conditions. The Bosch GDX18V-1800CN comes with a 4x bit holder, four bit tips and a belt clip.
